Burrow is an LSU Tigers legend and fans of college football remember his incredible performances for the Tigers on the way to winning the National Championship in 2019.
What fans may forget is that Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow began his college football career playing for the Ohio State Buckeyes. After visiting the Ohio State campus in December of 2012, Burrow committed to the Buckeyes in May of 2014 after winning Ohio’s Mr. Football his senior season in high school.
However, due to seeing limited time on the field from 2015 to 2017 at Ohio State, Burrow transferred to LSU after the 2017 college football season. Burrow only threw 39 total td pass during his redshirt freshman and sophomore seasons for 287 yards and two touchdowns.

8. Joe Burrow redshirted as a freshman at Ohio State in 2015.
That year, Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett split time playing quarterback. By 2017, when Burrow was ready to up his playing time, the quarterback position was far away. The future Cincinnati Bengals quarterback was behind freshman Dwayne Haskins on the depth chart along with Barrett. Knowing he wasn’t going to get playing time at Ohio St, Burrow transferred to LSU ahead of the 2018 season. Although a few colleges were in the race for Burrow, he chose LSU thanks to head coach Ed Orgeron.
Orgeron was able to lure Burrow away from the Cincinnati Bearcats after a weekend of talking football with the quarterback, his father Jimmy, and brother Dan. Burrow was also fed some Cajun meals that helped lure him to the Bayou.

Jimmy spent time in the pro ranks with the Green Bay Packers, then with Canada’s Montreal Alouettes, Calgary Stampeders, and Ottawa Rough Riders. Jimmy played for the Nebraska Cornhuskers prior to being drafted as a defensive back by the Packers in 1976 as the 218th pick in the NFL Draft. He played in just three games for the Packers in 1976 and at the end of the season, was released by the team. In 1977, Jimmy won the CFL’s Grey Cup as a member of the Alouettes. Jimmy spent five seasons in the CFL before retiring and becoming a coach.
6. Joe Burrow may have been the first pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, but coming out of high school, few college teams were interested in him.
According to QB Joe Burrow, he was told he wasn’t good enough before going to Ohio State. During his junior year of high school, Burrow had just one college scholarship offer. The scholarship was from Ohio University, where his father was a coach.
Burrow’s dad had starred at Nebraska, and the young quarterback wanted to play for the Cornhuskers. However, Nebraska told Burrow he wasn’t good enough to play for them. He chose Ohio State in the end, as it was the only big-time offer on the table.
5. Burrow went to Athens High School in The Plains, Ohio, which was near Ohio University, where his father, Jimmy, coached.
The Bengals QB led Athens High School to three-straight playoff appearances and posted insane passing numbers. While at Athens High School, Burrow threw for 11,416 passing yards, 157 touchdown passes, ran for 2,067 rushing yards, and 27 rushing touchdowns. He was crowned Ohio’s Mr. Football and the Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior in 2014.

The team’s only loss came against Toledo Central Catholic in the Division III state championship game where the final score was 56 to 52.

3. One of the contributing factors to Burrow’s decision to leave Ohio State after the 2017 season was former Buckeyes’ head coach Urban Meyer.
Meyer coached Ohio State from 2012 to 2018 and oversaw Burrow early in the quarterback’s career. Texas coach Tom Herman had convinced Meyer to sign Burrow, but once on campus, it appeared Meyer wasn’t happy or impressed with the quarterback. During practices, Meyer would criticize Burrow’s passing, saying things such as, “Not enough velocity. Joe...you’re a division III quarterback...you throw like a girl.” In the end, Burrow had the last laugh and could still be laughing with all the issues Meyer has had with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

2. Joe Burrow caught smoking a cigar in the locker room after LSU National Championship win.
LSU won the College Football National Championship Game with a 42 to 25 win over the Clemson Tigers in 2019. The team went 15-0 that season and to celebrate, Burrow and teammates lit up cigars in the locker room of the Super Dome, ala Michael Jordan. Not everyone was in a celebratory mood, however. A police officer at the Super Dome burst into the locker room while the players were smoking their cigars and threatened to arrest Burrow and his teammates for smoking indoors, which is illegal in New Orleans.
Several players laughed it off, but the officer wasn’t joking. Another officer had to quell the issue.
Along with smoking a cigar in the Super Dome locker room following LSU’s National Championship win, Burrow was spotted with a baseball cap that he wore while exiting the stadium. The purple cap turned heads because it had the words “Big Dick Joe” written on it in yellow.

Holzmacher was born and raised in Mason, Ohio. The couple met while they were students at Ohio State University.
Holzmacher completed a Data Analytics course at Ohio State University and worked as a facility operations team member at Lifetime Fitness from 2013 to 2015.
